Intersputnik and RASCOM Agree on a Strategic Partnership in Satellite Communications

Abidjan, Ivory Coast: The Intersputnik International Organization of Space Communications and the Regional African Satellite Communications Organization (RASCOM) have made an agreement on cooperation in satellite communications and other areas of mutual interest. The signed document provides for mutual consultations, participation in events held under the aegis of both international organisations and the possibility of exchange of information and documents.

In the agreement, Intersputnik and RASCOM stated mutual recognition and respect for the status and mandates of both organisations and established a long-term working relationship. As part of cooperation promotion, the organisations plan to attend formal and informal events, such as meetings of the Assembly of Parties of RASCOM and sessions of the Board of Intersputnik.

Intersputnik and RASCOM have agreed to discuss issues affecting their activities, and to exchange information and documents of mutual interest, with the exception of confidential ones. Such an exchange will make it possible to coordinate the efforts of both organisations in the International Telecommunication Union, the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), Global Satellite Operators Association (GSOA) and other international and regional intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations.

“We believe that combined efforts of our organisations will unlock the full potential of modern satellite communications systems for the African continent, and, ultimately, will contribute to the integration of our communities and business development in various sectors of the African economy”, said the Director General of RASCOM Timothy Ashong.

“Our international endeavours, which include close interaction with intergovernmental global and regional satellite communications organisations and other organisations engaged in exploration and use of space for peaceful purposes, are a key area of Intersputnik’s activities,” noted Ksenia Drozdova, Director General of Intersputnik. “We have always been open to a dialogue and exchange of information, aiming at equal long-term relationships. Cooperation with RASCOM opens up new prospects for us to introduce modern infocommunication services in African countries, improve the quality of life of people and bridge the digital divide, and achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”

RASCOM is an intergovernmental organisation uniting 45 member states, established in 1992 to extend telecommunications services, including voice and television, into all regions of Africa. In its activities, RASCOM gives priority to regional African satellite systems (satellites

launched by any of the RASCOM member states) including RASCOM’s own satellite launched in 2010 at 2.9°E. The use of third-party systems is also allowed if integrated into existing or prospective national networks.
